Your role

We are recruiting an Environmental and Social Officer who reports to the Manager of Corporate Governance and E&S for Financial Institutions.

In this role you will be responsible for:

• Appraising the environmental, social, and human rights risks and impacts of our investments in Financial Institutions, against the requirements of the IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights .
• Identifying risks in our portfolio, including high-risk sectors, country-contextual risks, and human rights concerns.
• Assessing if Financial Institutions and social risks, including the quality of their management systems and capacity to deal with risks.
• Assisting clients in establishing grievance mechanisms and building capacity to address project-related harms effectively.
• Working together with our investment staff, partners, and clients to meet IFC Standards, negotiating E&S requirements in legal agreements.
• Monitoring clients' compliance with FMO's Sustainability Policy, helping them implement Environmental and Social Action Plans.
• Offering training on environmental, social, and human rights issues to clients, staff, and colleagues.
• Managing portfolios and report through our ESG systems.
• Engaging with stakeholders on our Sustainability Policy and contribute to organizational ESG policy development.

Our offer

• Gross yearly salary of between EUR 70K - 85K (including holiday allowance and 13th month salary), depending on seniority, years of experience and background.

Your team

The Corporate Governance and Financial Institutions Environmental & Social (CG and FI E&S) Team sits within the ESG+ Department. The goal of this department, and specifically of the Environmental, Social and Governance officers is to create demonstrable impact for our clients beyond the financing FMO provides that is consistent with the international standards outlined in our Sustainability Policy . The CG & FI ES team works primarily on debt transactions with Financial Instutions across those regions where FMO is active.

Your background

You have solid knowledge of using Good International Industry Practices for managing environmental and social risks and impacts. This includes the IFC Performance Standards, World Bank Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and ILO standards. You have experience with Financial Institutions and indirect finance and you know how to support institutions in incorporating E&S/ESG risk management.

• Master's degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Human Rights, Anthropology, or other comparable sustainability studies.
• Six to ten years of relevant working experience in environmental and social risk management is required.
• Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Experience helping Financial Institutions enhance their E&S practices including the development and implementation of an Environmental Social Management System.
• Additional skills such as:
• Social expertise/ direct experience in the field of Human Rights (i.e., stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanism design & implementation).
• Experience working in the field of Corporate Governance, or expertise on Governance of E&S/Climate/Sustainability.
• Fluency in languages spoken in the markets we operate in, primarily Arabic, French and Spanish.
