Postdoc on Computational and Statistical Analysis of Genomics Data

Working at Utrecht University

Postdoc on Computational and Statistical Analysis of Genomics Data

Faculty: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Department: Department Biomolecular Health Sciences Hours per week: 28 to 36 Application deadline: 19 May 2024

Research at the Clinical Infectiology (KLIF) section focuses on zoonotic, parasitic and foodborne pathogens and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. The generation and analysis of sequencing data is part of our daily work for epidemiology, virulence and antimicrobial resistance determination, to assess the effects of interventions, and for diagnostics. KLIF offers an international and stimulating work environment at the forefront of scientific research. You will actively participate in our scientific meetings and publish the findings in peer reviewed scientific journals.

Your job

As a postdoc, you will be responsible for addressing the data analysis challenges arising from the latest advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies, including the analysis of microbiome and resistome data (amplicon, shotgun sequencing and longitudinal experiments), whole genome or single cell sequencing data. You will work together with project leaders and PhD candidates to answer research questions on transmission of pathogens, the effects of antimicrobial treatments on the microbiome and for assessing the microbiome and resistome for both epidemiological analyses and for diagnostics. You will thrive in a unique multi-disciplinary environment including veterinarians, biologists, and bioinformaticians, with an opportunity to supervise Master's students and contribute to teaching and hands-on multiple day workshops.

Your qualities

You will be encouraged to communicate complex scientific concepts in clear, accessible language, honing your presentation skills along the way. Additionally, you will have the platform to showcase your exceptional scientific writing abilities, as fluency in English is essential. We expect you to have:

  • a PhD degree in Microbiology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistical Genomics, Epidemiology or a related discipline;
  • affinity with microbiology, genomics and an understanding of microbiome research;
  • experience in biostatistical analysis and data interpretation for large data sets;
  • experience in R, Python or similar programming languages;
  • experience in integrating complex/omics data sets by translating the required handling into custom made programs.

Our offer

We offer an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about microbiology and eager to contribute to cutting-edge microbiome and microbial genomics research. Join us and be part of our dynamic community while refining your professional skills in a supportive and collaborative setting. Furthermore, we offer:

  • an employment contract for a duration of one year with 0.7-1.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) research time, optionally supplemented with 0.1 or 0.2 FTE teaching time (thus totaling 0.7 to 1.0 FTE). In case of a good performance, extending the employment is well within the range of possibilities;
  • a working week of 28 to 40 hours with a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,226 to €5,090 for a full-time position (scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities);
  • 8% holiday pay and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

At the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine we train the veterinarians and researchers of the future, provide care for animals and conduct leading and societal relevant research. That is what we are good at. We see that the health and welfare of animals, humans and the environment are interconnected. By sharing our knowledge and working together, we make positive impact, both nationally and internationally. Our 1,500 students and 950 employees inspire and strengthen each other. Our engagement connects us. The drive to, from an integral perspective, make the world a better place.

The Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology is renowned for its expertise in the field of clinical veterinary infectiology and molecular resistance and is part of the Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences. The division also trains European Board specialists in Veterinary Microbiology. To conduct its core activities, the group has laboratories for clinical microbiological diagnostics and research. This Division is entrusted with teaching and conducting applied research in the fields of biology and the prevention of infectious diseases and diseases of the immune system.

At Clinical Infectiology (KLIF), we do not only work with academic partners, but also with global organisations like the World Health Organisation, the World Organisation for Animal Health, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, holding reference centres on antimicrobial resistance and/or Campylobacter, but also as consultants.
